Barcelona Partners With Huawei To Boost Smart City Initiatives And Digital Skills Development

Barcelona City Council has partnered with Huawei Spain to enhance the city’s smart city initiatives, focusing on areas such as connectivity, smart buildings, and green energy. The collaboration also aims to develop ICT talent through the Huawei Spain Academy and Barcelona Activa’s IT Academy.

Barcelona City Council and Huawei Spain have entered into a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU), aiming to accelerate the city’s smart city initiatives and enhance its position as a technological leader in Europe. This collaboration focuses on advancing key areas such as the city command centre, smart buildings, connectivity, green energy, and ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) talent development. The smart city initiatives also aim to streamline urban transportation services, including the Barcelona airport taxi system which will benefit from improved digital dispatching and real-time traffic management.
The agreement aligns both parties’ commitment to creating a more sustainable and connected Barcelona, building upon the city’s established reputation as a hub for technological innovation. Huawei Spain will provide its technological expertise, leveraging its capabilities in cloud computing, ICT infrastructure, and AI, to support Barcelona’s digital transformation efforts.
Leo Chen, corporate senior vice president and president of enterprise sales at Huawei, states, “This agreement reflects our strong commitment to innovation and the digital transformation of cities. Barcelona is a global benchmark in technology and sustainability, and at Huawei, we are proud to collaborate in initiatives that will contribute to the development of a more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive digital ecosystem.”
Strengthening digital skills for future generations
A critical element of this collaboration is the development of ICT talent. Huawei will play a key role in advancing digital education through the newly established Huawei Spain Academy, which is the first of its kind in Europe. The academy, developed within the framework of Barcelona Activa’s IT Academy, will focus on enhancing digital skills, including programming and big data.
This initiative aims to bridge the skills gap in Spain, preparing the next generation of professionals for the challenges of the digital economy. Huawei’s training programs will equip individuals with the necessary knowledge to thrive in an increasingly tech-driven world.
Mayor Jaume Collboni of Barcelona highlights the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This collaboration, which reinforces Barcelona’s position as a technological capital, is an important step to promote digital inclusion and guarantee equitable access to technology. Joining efforts, we prioritise the development of digital skills through initiatives such as the IT Academy of Barcelona Activa.”
Smart city advancements and sustainable innovation
The strategic partnership also extends to several smart city projects, including the development of Barcelona’s city command centre, which will centralise operations and optimise the management of urban systems. The collaboration will foster the development of smart buildings and further enhance the city’s connectivity, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient urban environment.
Huawei’s expertise in global smart city development will provide Barcelona with the tools necessary to establish a leading benchmark for future cities across Europe. By providing innovative solutions in areas like green energy and infrastructure, the partnership aims to make Barcelona a model city for smart urban development, creating a replicable model for other cities around the world.
As Barcelona continues its efforts to become a digital and sustainable city, this partnership with Huawei is expected to have a lasting impact on both the city’s technological landscape and its citizens’ digital literacy, ensuring that Barcelona remains at the forefront of innovation in the smart city space.
